The plot follows a wealthy South African businessman trying to help out an aged woman whose prized possessions were stolen by a gang of thieves in 1983. He is able to rescue them only after returning to the scene of the crime and conducting some research. Plot Jon, an ageing millionaire, believes his missing briefcase containing irreplaceable pictures, jewellery and letters of great sentimental value was stolen on a business trip to Italy. The incident has placed his relationship with his wife Claire in jeopardy, although she seems to understand his reasons for returning to the scene of the crime. Briefcase Jon's business trip was to a mining operation in South Africa, where he meets and befriends Fred, a long time associate who lost his wife in an auto accident. Fred is a former boxer and a humble man, and when he tells Jon that he is ill-equipped for the physical rigors of the mines, Jon invites him to his Cape Town hotel room, where he welcomes him and gives him a job at his company. Jon's problems with Claire are exacerbated by the return of his ex-boyfriend, Ernie, who is carrying a torch for Jon's estranged wife, but who had a falling out with Jon after he dumped his wife. Jon is subsequently informed by his secretary and legal advisor that he will not inherit his business if his marriage is found to be invalid. At Fred's suggestion, Jon goes to stay at his cottage in the Western Cape for several weeks to ease his wife's suspicions about their relationship and to re-evaluate his decision to separate from Claire, during which time he is planning to take a few business trips. He enlists the help of his secretary, Robin, to book the flights and hotel rooms for his business trips. In the meantime, Jon hopes to find some clues to the theft of his briefcase on his research. Jon begins by visiting the office of the airline he used to take the business trip to Italy, but they have no record of him using the airline. He then visits his hotel in Milan, where he checks the registration cards and discovers that he had stayed there previously, having had his briefcase stolen during his last trip. At a nearby wine bar, he meets the manager, who is an old friend, and gives him the registration cards as a favor. The manager informs Jon that there is no record of the briefcase being checked in to the hotel when he stayed there, which implies that his briefcase could have been taken on the flight and then in his
